Fare go for taxi passsenger

Usually when you catch a taxi, you don’t expect to be the person who ends up driving the vehicle.

However, one man stepped in last night when his cab driver passed out twice on the Tullamarine Freeway.

The 43-year-old Queensland man got into the taxi at Melbourne Airport and asked to be taken to his Southbank hotel.

However the driver, a 24-year-old Wyndham Vale man, lost consciousness on the freeway and struck a number of concrete bollards.

No one was injured and he told his passenger he was fine to drive.

Shortly after, the taxi slowed down and was again heading straight for the bollards when the passenger leaned over and pulled the handbrake to stop the car. The driver had again passed out.

At this point the passenger decided he was better off driving himself to his City Road hotel, so he put the driver in passenger seat and took control of the vehicle.

Once there, he contacted police about 10pm who came down and assessed the driver.

The Wyndham Vale man is expected to be charged on summons with a range of traffic offences.
