Oath to ‘rebuild trust’ in financial planning industry

A Werribee financial planner wants to introduce a professional oath across his much- maligned industry.

In response to the ongoing stream of negative publicity surrounding rogue operators, including the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planners scandal, Vern Fettke launched the oath in Werribee last week aiming to re-establish some of the trust between planners and public.

“There’s a level of suspicion in the community about financial planners that is completely out of proportion to how the vast majority of us conduct ourselves professionally,” he said.

“Too often, the only news coverage you’ll get is when something goes wrong for investors. Those stories have negative repercussions across the whole industry.

“I want to bust the myth that financial planners are not to be trusted and invite anyone in the industry who has a proven and highly regarded reputation to take a professional oath that cements their dedication to their client.”

The oath has received support from Australian Securities and Investment Commission chairman Peter Kell and federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan.
