Refugee Week: Celebrating Wyndham’s diverse city

Wyndham residents are being encouraged to celebrate the city’s rich cultural diversity.

Wyndham council will join forces with local community groups for a series of events marking National Refugee Week (June 15-21).

Cr Gautam Gupta said “restoring hope” was the theme of this year’s celebrations, which aim to raise awareness of issues affecting refugees.

“Wyndham is home to humanitarian arrivals from all over the world, including over 400 people from Sudan and more than 1000 from Burma,’’ Cr Gupta said.

“[In] 2012, the council declared the municipality a refugee welcome zone. This commits Wyndham to safeguarding the rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion and working towards a greater understanding of cultural and religious diversity.”

The council is also developing a cultural diversity policy and action plan.

“An important part of this plan is to lay out how Wyndham City will continue to work in partnership with service providers, community groups and community members in creating the type of community that restores hope for those who come here having experienced traumatic circumstances.”

The film Mary Meets Mohammad will be screened at the Wyndham Cultural Centre on June 18. Tickets are $10. For more details, phone 8734 5430.
