‘Erratic’ Hoppers Crossing driver on notice

A Hoppers Crossing man is facing a string of driving charges after allegedly being caught driving on the wrong side of the road.

A member of the public alerted police to “erratic” driving about 9pm on Saturday.

Police are alleging the man, 25, drove a Hyundai through a red light, swerved in and out of traffic and drove on the wrong side of the road near Albert Park.

Police said the car was driven along Kerferd, Queens and St Kilda roads before being stopped in Barkly Street.

The man was arrested by Prahran highway patrol officers and is expected to be charged with drink-driving, disqualified driving, driving an unregistered vehicle and other traffic- related offences.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

A police road blitz, Operation Regal, targeted speed, driver distraction, seatbelts, fatigue, and drugs and alcohol during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

The blitz was part of the ‘Road to Zero – it starts with you’ campaign, which encourages the community to take ownership of road trauma and work together to achieve a vision of zero deaths and zero serious injuries on Victorian roads. The campaign continues until the end of this month.

Road policing operations’ Superintendent Neville Taylor said police wanted June’s road toll to be the lowest on record.
