New coach helps Truganina Hornets find its sting

A new coach has brought a new dawn at the Truganina Hornets.

The Hornets have picked up six of a possible six points since Darron Cox took the helm of the senior team two weeks ago.

The form reversal has seen the Hornets climb out of the bottom two in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 west and in with a shot of survival after being in the relegation firing line in the second half of the season.

“We’ve put in a new coach to take the team and they’ve responded pretty well to that,” Hornets president Sergio Lunedei told Star Weekly.

“We’ve got two wins in a row and hopefully we don’t stop from here.

“It takes us out of that danger zone, which I don’t think we deserved to be in.”

The Hornets needed only the barest of margins to collect three points from their trip to Keilor Wolves on Saturday.

The 1-0 scoreline was brought about by a first half goal to Maker Maker, who got on the end of a low squared ball and coolly slotted it into the bottom corner of the net.

“He missed an easy one two minutes before,” Lunedei said.

“We all screamed out, ‘you’ll put the next one in’ and he did.”

Only at the final whistle did the Hornets get full reward for their dominance.

It was a largely frustrating day for the visitors with a string of chances going begging.

Paul Pham and Luca Marongiu totally dictated the tempo of the game from the centre of the field.

“I’m frustrated that it was only 1-0, but it does the job,” Lunedei said.

“As long as we got the three points, that’s what matters.

“The team played just wonderfully.

“The way they played with the one-two touches was amazing.”

The Hornets are three points clear of the drop zone with four games to play.

They will be raging hot favourites when they play bottom side Laverton Park at Arndell Park Reserve on Saturday.

Laverton has only won once in 18 games, but the twist is that it came against the Hornets.

“We have to be careful, we have to respect any opponent and play the way that we play,” Lunedei said.

Point Cook’s title aspirations are all but gone after a 4-0 loss to new ladder leader Bell Park.

The Jets are in sixth place on the ladder, five points behind the top side.

In state league 3 north-west, Hoppers Crossing was held to a 1-1 draw at Western Eagles, but kept hold of its seven-point advantage at the top of the table.
