Big V: Wildcats pounceon tired Devils

WERRIBEE Devils have won their share of admirers for the competitiveness of a young team in a promotion year in the Big V basketball men’s championship.

The Devils have been in the contest late in the fourth quarter of most games.

They have taken it up to, and beaten, some of the glamour clubs of the championship.

Now, are we starting to see the first signs of fragility in the young Devils? They suffered their harshest loss of the season on Saturday night, being blasted to smithereens in a 109-62 loss to Eltham Wildcats at Eltham High School.

Too much of the load was left to Jordan Hughes (17 points and five rebounds) and Te Puao Silver (16 points and five rebounds).

A six-game losing streak has ended the Devils’ finals dream.

They are suddenly closer to the bottom sides than those at the top.

Survival is the priority now for the Devils.

They will go some way to securing their top-flight status if they can get a win over Diamond Valley Eagles at the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Werribee Devils maintained their pursuit of the minor premiership in the women’s division 2, smashing Chelsea Gulls 78-58 at home on Saturday evening.

Lisa Troyahn had a huge impact for the Devils with 29 points and eight rebounds, while Nicole Green was a menace on the boards with 10 rebounds to go with seven points.

The Devils will square off with the out-of-sorts Coburg Giants on the road on Saturday night.
