West lures young house buyers

The 3029 postcode of Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina is proving popular with young people looking to buy a house.

Online credit scoring and information service Credit Simple last week released an analysis of its mortgage application data for the first half of this year. The figures show that within Victoria, 3029 had the highest number of potential house buyers aged under 30.

The 3064 postcode in Melbourne’s northwest, which takes in Craigieburn,Roxburgh Park, Kalkallo, Donnybrook and Mickleham, was second highest.

Credit Simple spokeswoman Emily Price said house buyers aged 30 and under accounted for 15 per cent of all mortgage applications made in Australia.

Samantha McCarthy, a senior sales consultant from hockingstuart Werribee, said affordability was one of the main reasons why under-30s were attracted to buying property in Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina.

Figures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria show that while the median house price for Melbourne was $822,000 in June, Hoppers Crossing’s median was $520,000, Tarneit’s median was $510,000 and Truganina’s $447,500.

“We’ve seen a huge amount of growth in property prices out our way, and in the western suburbs, but some areas like Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina are still incredibly affordable compared to the average Melbourne house price,” Ms McCarthy said.

She said that the infrastructure in Wyndham was a drawcard for many young people.

“Pacific Werribee has been a massive drawcard and also, near Truganina and Tarneit, you have the railway stations and the Regional Rail Link, which just wasn’t there three to five years ago,” she said.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show Tarneit’s population increased 372 per cent between June 30, 2006, and June 30 last year, growing from 7740 residents to 36,532.

Truganina’s population rose 698 per cent in the same period, growing from 3128 people to 24,977.
