Thousands flocked to the heart of Werribee at the weekend to enjoy the annual Weerama street festival.

Watton Street was closed off to traffic on Sunday, with more than 100 market stalls lining the street and the annual street parade taking over. The day-long festival also included the Werribee Tigers’ season launch, the W Factor talent competition and rides.

Weerama president Marcel Mahfoud estimated about 3500 people attended the festivities, with many happy to see the event returned to Werribee’s CBD after it ran at Presidents Park last year.

Festival organisers spent last week scrambling to get all the necessary permits for the event after Wyndham council turned down a request to cover the costs of traffic management and rubbish collection for Weerama five weeks ago.

A place of public entertainment permit was issued on Friday, only two days out from the festival.
