Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a suspicious fire at Haines Drive Reserve in Wyndham Vale about 4pm on Monday.

Werribee Crime Investigation Unit’s detective senior constable Laura Kilpatrick said the fire has been deemed “criminal damage by arson”.

“Investigations are continuing, but it appears rubbish that had been left around was lit on fire,” she said.

“There has been extensive damage to the roof and the side of the building facing the oval.”

Wyndham Vale Fire Brigade captain Trevor Weston said six CFA trucks from Wyndham Vale, Werribee and Hoppers Crossing attended the scene.

Mr Weston said the brigade was growing frustrated by the number of deliberately lit fires around Wyndham.

“We had the Hoppers Crossing playground being set alight just last week, and now this,” he said.

“This is a community building, anybody lighting fires needs to sit back and look at what they’re taking away from the community.”

Anybody with any information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
