Werribee is all set to get its own cancer support house – and you can thank these people for the project.
A group of 30 cyclists and seven support crew took off from Werribee’s Riverwalk estate on Friday and will spend this week on a 1000-kilometre fundraising ride through Kyneton, Halls Gap and Hamilton before arriving at the Rotary District 9800 Conference in Warrnambool on Friday.
The fundraiser has been organised by RoCan, a trust established through Williamstown Rotary Club to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and help with research into the cause and cure of the disease, and aims to raise $100,000.
Organiser Yvonne Moon has spent the past 18 years championing RoCan after her lifelong friend Anna Buckley died from ovarian cancer.
She said a portion of the proceeds raised through the ride would go towards ovarian cancer research, and the rest towards the cancer support house.
Late last year, the group purchased land at Riverwalk estate for the support house, but still need another $300,000 to get the project over the line.
The facility will provide overnight accommodation for families whose loved ones are undergoing treatment.
“It will be a double-storey custom-built house for men and women diagnosed with cancer, all forms of cancer,” Ms Moon said.
