Tributes have flowed for much-loved Wyndham community member Harold Rixon, who recently passed away.

Harold’s family held a private funeral for him on Friday, July 17.

Harold was a familiar face to many residents, through his volunteer work and involvement with Werribee Football Club, Werribee Cricket Club, Werribee VFL, WRFL and the Wynbay Bulldogs.

One of Harold’s many roles was attending the gate at Avalon Airport Oval on Werribee FC game days.

The football club’s chief executive, Mark Penaluna, said: “Harold was a wonderful man who always had a smile on his face.

“I never heard anyone speak ill of Harold and I think that is a measure of any person”.

The Werribee Football Club posted a homage to Harold on its Facebook page last week, which resulted in hundreds of people leaving comments about their memories of him.

Several people commented about how much they enjoyed chatting with Harold on game days, describing him as “a beautiful man” and “a true gentleman”.

The Wynbay Bulldogs, a community football team dedicated to providing sporting and recreational opportunities to people from Wyndham and Hobsons Bay, also posted a tribute to Harold on its Facebook page.

Harold was a life member of the Wynbay Bulldogs, with the post describing him as “an integral part” of the team.

The post said the number of ways in which Harold contributed to the team was “really too many to name” but included helping people access the club building; checking team sheets for accuracy; sweeping out the rooms; attending training and games; and manning the scoreboard.

“Rest in Peace Harold and keep an eye on our score, it’s not about winning but next season we just might give it a go for you!” the post said.

In September 2016, Harold was presented with a “Champions of the Code” award by the state government.

The awards honour volunteers in local football.

At the time, Werribee MP Tim Pallas said: “Harold is a worthy recipient of the award – a true champion of the code.”

Harold is survived by his three children and grandchildren.
