A Victoria University program is giving year 12 students across the west their first taste of university life.

Students from 10 high schools have taken part this year in the Early Uni Pathways program, which allows VCE students the chance to complete two first-year university units for VCE credit and guaranteed entry to Victoria University after they graduate from high school.

Unlike universities that target only academic high achievers for their early-entry programs, VU is also keen to take on students who may not have originally considered going to university.

Program manager Jacinta Richards said VU was keen to make the transition from high school to university more achievable.

“If they get to know what a uni is like, they’re in a better position to make those choices.”

Manor Lakes Secondary College students Caleb Haines and Kayla Davis – the only high school students in the state studying university-level paramedical science – believe the program is a great way to fast-track their careers.

Caleb, who has attended the St Albans campus this year while completing year 12, said he found the experience interesting.

“The course is pretty complex, but the tutorials and lectures are good and they help to break down all the content,” he said.
