Wyndham ferry service ‘temporarily postponed’

Weekend sailings between Wyndham Harbour and Docklands are likely to continue following the completion of Port Phillip Ferries’ five-month trial.

The trial officially wrapped up last Friday and the 35-metre-long catamaran has been lifted out of the water for maintenance works over the next month.

Ferry operations manager Jamie Ruscoe said the service was “temporarily postponed” while maintenance was taking place.

“The exact date of recommencement is yet to be determined,” Mr Ruscoe said.

“However, we have every intention of continuing the service and further announcements will be made during the maintenance period.”

The 400-seat Wyndham Explorer catamaran started its Wyndham Harbour to Docklands trial on May 16, and has since undergone several timetabling and price changes in response to public feedback.

Despite this, commuter numbers dropped off during the week, prompting Port Phillip Ferries to pare back the seven-day service and instead run two return Friday services, and a return service on Saturdays and Sundays.

The business also started a daily Portarlington to Docklands service off the back of three “highly successful” passenger trials.

Port Phillip Ferries did not provide updated passenger numbers when asked by Star Weekly, but in a statement released last week said “encouragingly, patronage of the service has gained momentum over the later part of the trial period”.
