Thousands of people turned out for the Anzac Day dawn service at the Werribee cenotaph on Tuesday, despite the rain and inclement conditions.

Werribee RSL president Daryl Ryan said an Anzac march, held on Sunday April 23, was also well-attended.

“It was the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen there, including the number of people who marched down Watton Street and those watching,” he said.

“There were so many school kids, scouts and guides, it’s great they’re being involved.

“There were also old fellows aged 96, 97, from the second World War, some Gurkhas, members of the Karen community from Burma, Vietnam war veterans and those from more recent conflicts.” Mr Ryan, who read out the Anzac requiem at the dawn service, said several people laid wreaths afterwards.

Following the event, many attendees visited the community centre next to the RSL for a free breakfast.

Mr Ryan said games of two-up were played by some of the younger people.

“The RSL is fairly busy – a lot of people come in and thank the old diggers for what they’ve done,” Mr Ryan said.
