Landing a sports haven

Construction has started on a $5.7 million sports reserve in Williams Landing.

Suburb developer Cedar Woods hosted an official sod turning to mark the beginning of construction of Williams Landing Boulevard Reserve last Friday. The reserve is bounded by Williams Landing Boulevard, Palmers and Freya roads and Chessington Drive.

The sports precinct will be constructed in two stages, with stage one slated for completion by November.

The reserve will include two full-size ovals, six tennis courts (two of which will also be suitable for netball), cricket nets and a playground.

Works will start on stage two of the development, which will include a sports pavilion and a 131-space carpark, in the next financial year.

Wyndham council will foot $4.2 million of the total project cost, with the rest to be funded through developer contributions.

Sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard said the two sports ovals would cater for multiple sports, including AFL, soccer and cricket.

“The Williams Landing Boulevard Reserve is going to be a centre of activity for the Williams Landing and wider community,” Cr Maynard said.

Mayor Henry Barlow added: “It will certainly benefit not only Williams Landing, but also the wider Wyndham community.

“Sport, in my view, is instrumental in promoting a sense of community.

“With our growing community, council is committed to creating more opportunities to develop quality leisure and sporting activities for our residents.”
