A Wyndham councillor has raised concerns about high risk traffic behaviour occurring in Thomas Carr Drive in Tarneit.

Cr Josh Gilligan raised a notice of motion during a council meeting on Tuesday, May 24, that would see council undertake a review of potential traffic interventions to prevent hoon behaviour.

In a written rationale, Cr Gilligan said he supported the call and looked forward to a future report being presented to council for consideration.

The motion was seconded by Cr Jennie Barrera who said the hooning was “potentially a serious issue”.

“It’s in a school zone, I definitely think it warrants a report and I’ll be interested to see what the report says,” Cr Barrera said.

Cr Susan McIntyre also spoke, and raised the importance of reporting hoon driving in the municipality to relevant authorities and not just to council.

“These reports do make up some of the tasking which highway patrol carries, so it is critical that people who are concerned about this sort of antisocial driving and poor behaviour, which is really quite serious in our community, that they don’t just report the matter to the council,” she said.

“They need to be reporting it to the appropriate authorities as well to make sure that this behaviour can be checked.”

“Speed humps are usually to tackle where people are traveling at above a normal speed limit generally, and not so much to target hooning or burnouts,” Cr McIntyre said.

All councillors present at the meeting voted in favour of the motion and it was subsequently carried.
