IN FOCUS: Thomas Carr puts on a fine act

Thomas Carr College Principal Dr Andrew Watson says the college is a welcoming, friendly community where each person is valued and spirituality nurtured.

The Catholic co-educational year 7 to 12 school is located in the growing suburb of Tarneit.

“In the spirit of Archbishop Carr, young men and women are encouraged to strive for excellence according to their individual gifts,” Dr Watson says.

“To encourage our students to pursue their gifts and talents, they are able to engage in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities.”

Thomas Carr has an extensive music and drama program.

Ensemble options include brass, woodwind, flute and clarinet, along with jazz, intermediate and senior concert bands and choir.

Opportunities to perform in front of audiences and showcase their talents are available to students on a number of occasions throughout the year.

Students perform in various college musicals and drama productions.

“This year, the college presented The Addam’s Family over three nights in the new Father Moran Performing Arts Centre,” Dr Watson says.

“Each year in May, the college celebrates Thomas Carr Day, during which students display their talents in front of the entire school community at Thomas Carr’s Got Talent.”

Students compete in a weekly sports program and major swimming, athletics and cross-country carnivals.

Competitions in chess and public speaking also take place throughout the year.

The college has had an ongoing relationship with the Malaya Borneo Veterans Association since 2001.

“This provides students with the chance to attend various remembrance services and to represent both the college and the Malaya Borneo veterans at the annual Anzac Day March in Melbourne’s CBD,” Dr Watson explains.

“Students may also take on responsibility through the numerous student leadership positions available.

“Joining the Student Representative Council and becoming house, college and vice-captains are other chances to demonstrate leadership.”

Thomas Carr College continues to develop facilities that ensure students have the very best in technology and equipment for excellent extra-curricular programs.
