The man behind the popular Falls Festival is launching a family-friendly event to be held at Werribee Mansion over the Melbourne Cup weekend.

Simon Daly says the new music and arts festival, dubbed The Lost Lands, will bring together music, art, theatre, comedy and camping.

“The Lost Lands will give parents the chance to reconnect with the festival experience, while instilling in kids a love and appreciation of music, arts and adventure.”

Daly, who has a family of five, said there was a need for a more family-oriented cultural scene in Australia.

“In Europe, festivals often include children,” he said.

“They program shared experiences to be enjoyed by parents, kids, singles – anyone really. The result is a more sophisticated generation who know, love and participate in the festival experience. I think there’s an appetite for more experiences crafted with parents and kids in mind.”

The new festival will include a literature area that will host readings and discussion topics for adults and children and workshops in songwriting, cooking, yoga and circus play.

Camping, bushwalks, bike riding and visits to the Werribee zoo will also be part of the fun.

Among music artists signed for the debut festival are Architecture in Helsinki (pictured above), The Waifs, The Grates, The Bamboos with Tim Rogers, Ozomatli, Nicky Bomba, Ainslie Wills and CW Stoneking.

The festival, from October 28-31, will be run in partnership with Wyndham council and Parks Victoria. Details: www.thelostlands.com.au
