Lion cubs born at Werribee Zoo | VIDEO

This is your first look at Werribee Open Range Zoo’s latest addition.

These three African lion cubs were born in the early hours of Tuesday morning, and were the first litter for mother Nilo and father Johari.

They are also the first lion birth in Werribee Zoo’s history.

Nilo and her cubs are currently off display in a special birthing den, with vets and keepers monitoring them closely via a video camera link.

General manager of Life Sciences Russel Traher said it was important that Nilo had the privacy to bond with her cubs and utilise her natural mothering instincts.

“Video monitoring is really important in allowing us to take a hands-off approach while keeping a close eye on the health of mother and cubs,” Mr Traher said.

It will be several weeks before vets are able to weigh and determine the sex of the cubs.

Zoo-goers can expect to wait at least another six weeks before seeing the cubs in action.
