Tarneit Senior College teacher Tom Cleeland has undergone a big chop in the name of charity.
As part of a community project undertaken by year 12 VCAL students last month, Mr Cleeland had his long locks cut – and his beard trimmed – all for a good cause.

Star Weekly before the haircut, which took place in the school’s gym at lunchtime, as students and staff watched on.
The VCAL students who organised the event sold raffle tickets, with the three winning entrants given the opportunity to take the “first chops” at Mr Cleeland’s hair, before a professional hairdresser completed the job.
“The students will put the money raised towards the building of a community garden at the school, in which they’re aiming to grow fresh produce for Foodbank Victoria,” Mr Cleeland said.
He said the VCAL students had started out hoping to raise $500 through the project, but ended up raising $1690.
He said the students behind the fundraiser were “really great”, and had organised approval for the event from the school council; spoken to local businesses to get prizes for the raffle; held a fundraising barbecue at Bunnings; and put up advertising around the school.
Mr Cleeland said he felt a bit “nervous” before undergoing the haircut.
“My last haircut was about 18 months ago, and with my new look, it might take my eight-month-old daughter Isobel a day or two to recognise me,” he said.
