Joy’s at the end of this epic ride

PETER ‘Muddy’ Waters isn’t fanging it down the Hume Highway.

But on a motorised scooter, his 11-day inland ride from Sydney to Melbourne to raise money for children’s wheelchairs is a remarkable feat, even at a steady 15km/h.

The Werribee resident, who has cerebral palsy, says he wanted to do something for children who need help with mobility like he does.

Since setting out from Sydney on October 30, Mr Waters has averaged 100 kilometres a day in his drive to raise funds for children’s foundation Variety and the Lion’s Club Mobility Foundation.

Variety’s fund-raising manager Nicole Leppitsch, who is accompanying Mr Waters on his journey, says he drives from 8am-6pm every day.

She says the journey has so far raised $10,000, which Variety will use to buy two walkers for children under 18 who have cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis and autism.

Mr Waters says the long days can take their toll, but he knows he’s doing it for a good cause.

“I do get tired. [But] all the kids are wonderful and they need our help.

“There is nothing better than seeing the absolute joy on a child’s face when they are presented with their much-needed equipment.”

Mr Waters had a rest day for his birthday yesterday in Yarrawonga, before heading to Nagambie, Kalkallo and then home to Melbourne.
