Playground in full swing

Children in Williams Landing have a new playground to explore following the reopening of Bushlark Crescent Park. Wyndham Council spent $115,006 extending the playground, landscaping, paving and park furniture. The project is one of four being carried out by the council, with Saltwater, Malleehen, Latham and Cambridge Crescent reserves all being improved in the coming months.

Date set for Youth Fest

Young people living in Wyndham will kick up their heels this month as part of the council’s annual Youth Fest. The November 24 event will include live music, rides and a barbecue. Early years and youth manager Rob McVernon said young people made an invaluable contribution to the community and deserved to be recognised. Youth Fest is at the Youth Resources Centre, 80 Derrimut Road, Hoppers Crossing from 4-9pm. Details: youth.wyndham.vic.gov.au

Refugees learn about their rights

Wyndham’s Karen residents have been learning about their rights and responsibilities with the help of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Minister Nicholas Kotsiras. Seminars were held in Werribee last week to teach Karen refugees about their rights in the workplace, democracy and citizenship. Mr Kotsiras said the seminar explored the important principles of democracy, multiculturalism and citizenship including topics such as volunteering and the Australian legal system. “The program also provides critical information on safe driving, tenancy, financial management, the role of police, rights and responsibilities of young people and family relationships,” he said.

Firearms, drugs found in car

A Tarneit man has been arrested after police found firearms, drugs and a baton in his car. Police stopped the car at the intersection of Sayers and Derrimut roads, Tarneit about 1am Monday. After searching the car, they found the weapons and drugs. The driver, 25, was arrested and his car impounded for 30 days. He is expected to be charged with multiple weapons, drugs and traffic offences.

Youngsters to warm to T20

Point Cook children are being urged to try their hand at cricket this summer. Wyndham Council is hosting a T20 blast come and try day at Saltwater Reserve on Sunday for children aged 8-12. Recreation planning co-ordinator Ken Chalmers said it was a great way to introduce children to cricket. Details: wyndham.vic.gov.au
