WERRIBEE CFA’s volunteer firefighters put their skills to the test last week when a Monday training night became the real deal.
A dark cloud of smoke emerged from half a kilometre down the road from the station after a house in Carter Crescent went up in flames about 7pm.
Crews quickly ran hose lines and used disc-cutting saws to gain entry through garage roller doors.
Captain Michael Wells (pictured) said an aggressive battle followed at the front and rear of the brick veneer property.
It took crews 10 minutes to control the blaze, which was contained to the garage with only minor damage to the house.
The Werribee brigade activated pumper, tanker and rescue appliances. They were supported by a pumper from Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook CFA stations, and a breathing apparatus support vehicle from Sunbury. Twenty-five firefighters attended the scene.
A council building surveyor inspected the damaged structure, while an inspector from Energy Safe Victoria attended on Tuesday.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated although it is believed to be accidental.
In a separate incident last Friday, Wyndham CFA crews from Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Point Cook, Truganina and Wyndham Vale were called to a fire at a unit in Shaws Road in Werribee.
The blaze, which began in the bedroom, soon spread through ceiling space and engulfed most of the unit.
It was brought under control in 15 minutes and caused an estimated $100,000 damage.
Werribee CFA lieutenant Paul Ryan said it appeared an occupant of the unit had placed some lighted incense on a bed head and moved to another area of the unit.
Mr Ryan urged residents using incense or candles to take extra care.
