Although he’s left the classroom, Brendan Coyne is still helping students reach their full potential.
With more than 40 years’ experience as a school teacher and principal, Mr Coyne now spends a few hours every week tutoring secondary school students as part of the homework club at Wyndham Vale library.
The club provides free one-on-one learning support and assistance to years 7 to 12 students with their curriculum-based homework and studies.
“It’s a job that would suit tertiary teaching students or retired teachers like myself who can put in a couple of hours a week,” Mr Coyne said.
“We have students who come along who might have missed a few crucial lessons or who have language difficulties and are struggling to understand the work.
“Some are high achievers and are aiming high. Others might just want help honing their skills and knowledge before an important test.”
The club meets every Tuesday from 3.30pm at Wyndham Vale library, 86 Manor Lakes Boulevard, Wyndham Vale. Similar homework programs for both primary and secondary students run at the Werribee and Plaza libraries.
National Volunteer Week (May 11-17)recognises the efforts of six million Australians, who give up their time to help others and their communities. To recognise Wyndham’s volunteers, the council will hold a morning tea at the civic centre on Tuesday at 10am.
