Services united for Wyndham’s homeless youth

Support services across Wyndham will converge on Werribee Plaza next week to raise awareness of youth homelessness.

It’s estimated that more than 400 people in Wyndham are homeless. Many of them are young people couch surfing or living on the streets.

A stand at the shopping centre manned by staff from the city’s welfare organisations will help draw attention to the problem and provide young people with advice and support.

The event is being organised by Werribee Support and Housing (WSH), Yarra Community Housing, Whitelion, Anglicare and the Wyndham Legal Service.

WSH crisis counsellor Cath Guerrieri said youth homelessness was a growing problem in Wyndham because the municipality had no emergency accommodation for young people.

As part of WSH’s Reconnect program, Ms Guerrieri works with young people who are at risk of becoming homeless, helping them find somewhere to live.

“We want people to know that youth homelessness matters,” Ms Guerrieri said.

The organisations will be offering information on where to get help as well as performing a short skit about homelessness.

The event is on Thursday, April 16, from 1-5pm.
