My Wyndham: Murray Brown

Wyndham council is collecting stories from residents about their vision for the city in 25 years’ time. Hoppers Crossing resident Murray Brown shares his Wyndham 2040 Project story.

What’s your connection to the community?

I’ve lived in Wyndham for more than 40 years, initially in Werribee and finally settling in Hoppers Crossing. I have been heavily involved in the Department of Agriculture and the State Research Farm in Werribee throughout my career, and most recently have been working for the CSIRO, based in both Werribee and Clayton.

How has Wyndham changed? When I moved here, the population was about 15,000 people and there was not a single set of traffic lights. All stores in the “country suburb of Werribee”, as it was known, closed at 5pm and we even had to drive to Footscray for the closest pizza shop. I never could have imagined the immense growth that we’ve seen in my time here.

What do you like most about Wyndham?

My wife and I have raised four kids here, three of whom still live here with their families. Wyndham, initially as a shire and now as a city, has a close community spirit. The diversity we enjoy has turned Wyndham from a rural township to a vibrant city and we are lucky to have so many opportunities to contribute.

What do you hope Wyndham is like in 2040?

I think Wyndham will be a thriving and active community in 2040, and I hope through good planning and good design we will have a mature and well-established municipality, rich in its social, physical and environmental assets.
