Melton enjoyed an upset win against Werribee in the Bowls Victoria metropolitan pennant competition on Saturday.
Despite sitting three places lower than the Bees on the ladder, it was a fired-up Melton outfit that claimed the points, winning 87-66.
Werribee skipper Snowy Barker said it was a disappointing performance from his side.
“I don’t think, as a group, we handled the match as good as they did,” he said.
“No one really stood out for us. No one really stands out when you get beaten on all four rinks.
“It was disappointing not to go there and beat them.
“We are still second on the ladder, believe it or not, so that’s the positive of it.”
Werribee will turn its attention to a crunch game against third-placed Eltham this week. Although 22 points separate the two sides, a loss could put the Bees’ home final in jeopardy.
The two sides last met in round seven, with Eltham winning by four shots at home.
“It’s a game we should win and we expect to win it if we’re going to play finals,” Barker said.
“We need to win the home games, there is no doubt about that. We need to win to keep our home final.”
Since Christmas, Werribee has won one of its three matches and is five games behind top-of-the table Altona.
Barker says his players need to find some consistency to turn around their form slump.
“I think everyone can improve overall,” he said. “We have been pretty ordinary since Christmas. To get beaten the other week at home was terrible.
“We need to try and claw our way back to some sort of form and be more consistent.”
It’s a different story for Melton, which is the hunter heading into the final three rounds of the season.
After sitting inside the top four for most of the season’s first half, Melton is in fifth spot after 15 rounds, four points behind fourth-placed Essendon.
Melton will look to keep its winning run going when it takes on seventh-placed Donvale this week.
