Koalas feeling right at home at Werribee zoo

A couple of Australia’s most iconic marsupials are settling into their new home at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Koalas Collosus and Bella arrived from Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park in South Australia last week and have taken up residence in the zoo’s Australian Journey exhibit.

The pair, both aged six, will spend three weeks in quarantine before visitors can see them in the new walk-through exhibit.

The zoo’s life sciences manager, Meaghan McPharlin, said that within minutes of arriving the pair had found a place in the eucalyptus trees and were munching away on leaves.

Koalas in the wild are increasingly under threat as a result of habitat loss, disease and vehicle traffic.

Australian Journey is also home to kangaroos, emus, brolga and the eastern barred bandicoot, now considered to be extinct in the wild.
