Smoke alarm warning after Werribee unit fire

A man in his 40s was taken to hospital with burns to his arms after a unit fire in Werribee last Friday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the blaze in Market Road, near Werribee train station, soon after 2.30pm.

Three fire crews fought the fire, with police blocking Market Road and Manly Street, stranding buses at Werribee station.

Werribee CFA Lieutenant Paul Ryan said the unit was already well alight when crews arrived on the scene.

The man, who was the only person inside at the time of the fire, is believed to have been asleep in a bedroom at the rear of the unit when the fire broke out.

Lieutenant Ryan said the blaze most likely started in the bedroom before quickly spreading into the roof, causing an estimated $80,000 damage.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined but Mr Ryan said it was a timely reminder of the importance of having smoke alarms.

The man was released from hospital on Saturday.
