The site of the former Glen Devon primary school in Werribee has been earmarked to become home to both an English language school and special school.
Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury told Star Weekly he was working to have the now-vacant lot returned to the community.
“We’re working on something for the site,” Mr Elsbury said. “There’s an English language school at Wyndham Central College that I want moved there because they’ve asked for it.”
Mr Elsbury said the English language school was currently made up of four portable classrooms, which could easily be moved to the former Glen Devon school block.
He said the rest of the site would ideally be used by Warringa Park special school as a second campus.
“Warringa Park is always looking for more space and I think that would be the best outcome for the people of Wyndham,” he said.
“I don’t want any housing in that area. I still believe the community will benefit from having that site. The [education] department is receptive to the idea.”
Mr Elsbury said the plan was likely to be carried out in the next four years if the Liberal government was re-elected in November.
The site has been vacant since Glen Devon primary school closed in 2010. It became a target for vandals before being burned down in November 2011.
Tarneit MP Tim Pallas would make no commitment on the future of the site if Labor was elected in November, but he said something had to be done.
“The Napthine Coalition government has failed to make a decision on the future of the site for three and a half years,” he said.
“The government must make a decision and ensure calls for it to become a community resource are met rather than ignored.”
