Advisory group to have say on Wyndham rates

RATEPAYERS are being urged to nominate for a new advisory group and have their say on Wyndham’s rating strategy.

The council is forming the group in response to rates hikes in parts of Wyndham north.

As reported by the Weekly, landowners in parts of Tarneit, Truganina and Mount Cottrell received rate rises of up to 700 per cent this financial year after revaluations meant the value of their properties soared.

Advisory group members will have a chance to comment on how the rates burden is distributed among landowners and whether special rates or rebates should be introduced.

The group’s recommendations will help the council form the 2014-15 budget.  It will be chaired by former Victorian valuer-general Jack Dunham. Sector representatives and residential ratepayers will be included among the members.

Nominations close August 2.
