Check that’s vital

Whether it’s studying after high school or preparing for a career change, choosing where to do it is a big decision.

An important point to check before enrolling in any course is whether the education provider is a registered training organisation (RTO).

RTOs are training providers registered by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) to deliver vocational education and training (VET) services.

They provide nationally-recognised training and qualifications at the following levels:

■ Certificates, I, II, III and IV

■ Diploma

■ Advanced diploma

■ Vocational graduate certificate

■ Vocational graduate diploma

There are 5000 RTOs in Australia.

Students can check if their training provider is one by visiting training.gov.au which is the authoritative national register of the VET sector in Australia.

The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) is the regulatory body for some RTOs in Victoria where:

★ The educational institution also offers courses in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, or online.

★ The institution offers courses to international students.

Students who are unsure whether ASQA is responsible for the regulation of their RTO can contact ASQA via their infoline on 1300701801 or email at: emailenquiries@asqa.gov.au
