A NIGHT of celebration ended in two friends being rushed to hospital with their faces gashed and bleeding.
A Werribee man, 31, and a Melton West man, 29, were glassed by two patrons on April 20 while celebrating an engagement party at the Anglers Tavern in Maribyrnong.
Melton West’s Justin was celebrating his engagement with family and friends when a group of them left the upstairs function room to watch his fiancee’s cousin sing on stage at about 11.30pm.
Justin, who did not want his surname used, said the man who attacked him had shoved into his mother.
“I asked him to relax and calm down [and said] ‘We’re only here for a good night’.
“He was swearing at me, I kept trying to tell him to relax, and then he headbutted me and smashed the glass over my face.”
Justin, who has 25 stitches in his face, said he was shocked at what happened and at first thought the blood pouring down his body was beer from the attacker’s glass.
He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with disfiguring injuries, while his friend, 31, of Werribee, was taken to the Western Hospital with lacerations to his face.
Senior Detective Brett van der Vliet of Maribyrnong police said the Werribee man was glassed by the offender’s companion when he went to Justin’s aid.
Police have released CCTV images of two men they want to question over the violent incident. He said the attackers were likely to face charges of intentionally causing serious injury.
