WYNDHAM residents could be waiting up to 12 years for a freeway interchange at Sneydes Road, Growth Areas Authority documents have revealed.
The state government announced the $40 million project late last year as part of the Werribee East employment precinct development.
Planning Minister Matthew Guy pledged to build a full diamond interchange to provide Point Cook residents with freeway access via Sneydes Road.
Mr Guy said the project would be funded by land sales in the employment precinct and that planning and design work would begin this year.
However, Growth Areas Authority documents state the northern half of the interchange will be completed between 2012 and 2017, while the southern half is slated for development between 2018 and 2025.
In a letter to residents outlining community information sessions about the Werribee East precinct, Wyndham Council chief executive Kerry Thompson suggested residents consider whether the government had provided a significant commitment to upfront investment in infrastructure, citing GAA plans to build the interchange in two stages.
Last week, Ms Thompson said the council expected the interchange to be delivered by 2016.
“While Wyndham City is very appreciative of the funding provided to date for this critical road project, we will be seeking further assurances from both the government and the Growth Areas Authority, as we fully expect a full diamond interchange at Sneydes Road to be delivered by 2016,” Ms Thompson said.
A spokeswoman for Mr Guy said the government remained committed to delivering a full diamond interchange at Sneydes Road.
