It’s been a season to remember for Western Athletics cross-country runner Liam Cashin.
Cashin, who claimed third place at the under-20 5000 metres at the Australian Track and Field Championships earlier this year, had a break-out campaign on the Victorian road racing and cross-country scene.
He won all five state level races, including road races and cross-country courses ranging in distance from four to 10 kilometres, to run away with the Victorian under-20 male athlete of the year title.
As captain of the Team Victoria secondary schools line-up, Cashin won the 2016 School Sport Victoria State Cross-Country Championships and the Victorian All Schools Under-20 State Cross-Country Championships.
He was also a key member of the local Western Athletics team that secured the Athletics Victoria XCR Under-20 premiership. On the national stage at the School Sports Australia championships, Cashin finished ninth overall in an under-20 race to be the first Victorian school student across the line, and was part of a team bronze-medal performance. In a relay event, he ran the fastest under-20 leg overall in a team that earned a silver medal.
