Werribee has done a demolition job on Melton in the Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 2.
The Tigers ran riot to record a 16-0 win in a shockingly one-sided game away at the Bridge Road Sports Precinct.
Even Tigers coach Les McAlinden could not help but spare a thought for the opposition, who endured upheaval in the off season with a number of players and coaches crossing to play with the newly-formed Caroline Springs.
“I felt sorry for Melton actually,” McAlinden said.
“The introduction of Caroline Springs saw Melton lose a lot of players.
“They just couldn’t match us at all.”
Werribee gained a lot out of the game.
The Tigers, who improved to 3-0, got a huge goal difference boost, improving to +28.
The style of play leading to the goal surge was the most impressive.
“It was a great attacking game by us,” McAlinden said.
“Most of them were brilliant team goals, starting from the backline with short passing from Cath Munro and Lynda Tivendale out to the halves and down to the forwards.
“It was a good team effort from all the girls.
“There wasn’t anyone trying to hog the ball.”
Werribee had a massive six individual goalscorers.
Three of the Tigers attackers – Holly Stewart, Sue Jones and Brittany McIntyre –scored four goals each.
McIntyre (10 goals) and Stewart (nine) are leading the league in goalscoring.
Four of the top five leading scorers are Werribee players with Jones (five) and Claudia Beamish (three) rounding out the top five.
Beamish scored twice against Melton, with Emma Tivendale and Chloe Pickersgill getting in on the act with one apiece.
Werribee remains one of two unbeaten teams in the competition along with Monash.
Those two sides will meet on May 20.
In the meantime, Werribee has a game with MHSOB to negotiate at the Werribee Hockey Centre on Saturday.
“If we can build into that Monash game and both teams go in undefeated, it will be a good showdown in a couple of weeks time,” McAlinden said.
