Werribee leads the way

Werribee Basketball Association has been adjudged the Basketball Association of the Year at the annual Basketball Victoria awards.

The criteria for the coveted award assesses the entire organisation from membership, participation growth, program development and community involvement.

In 2017, the WBA grew significantly across all parts of the association, leading to this recognition from Basketball Victoria.

WBA president Paul Jones is proud of the continued growth of the association based at Eagle Stadium in Werribee.

“In 2017 the WBA continued to experience extraordinary growth – 17 per cent – in participation numbers at junior levels, but also in programs delivered across all levels,” he said.

“Pathways, player, coach and referee development and community engagement, including reaching more than 7000 local students, have all grown over the last 12 months.

“The WBA has a clear vision to become the association of choice in Melbourne’s west, so to be named as a leader across the state is a great thrill.” WBA business manager Andrew Summerville said the award is a tribute to everyone in the organisation.

Meanwhile, the Werribee Devils have officially welcomed their 2018 imports.

New women’s division 1 import Alyssa Bennett and men’s championship imports Bryan Nagy and Konor Kulas have been hard at work at Eagle Stadium in preparation for this weekend’s season opening games.

The women’s team will tip off its season on the road at Warrandyte Venom on Sunday at 2pm, while the men’s team has a home season opener against Blackburn Vikings on Sunday at 3pm.
