Werribee continued to charge up the Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 2 ladder with a narrow 1-0 win over PEGS at President’s Park on Saturday.
The Tigers made it back-to-back wins and are unbeaten in three matches to be knocking on the door of the top-four in fifth spot.
It was more gritty than pretty for the Tigers, but coach Les McAlinden was not concerned.
“We wanted the three points first and that’s what we set out to get,” he said.
“We got them and if we win next week we move up to the top four and then we can concentrate on holding it.”
The Tigers threw everything but the kitchen sink at PEGS to claim the victory, but came up empty-handed time and again.
They had a goal disallowed and hit the post three times before scoring midway through the second half through Jodi Dumbleton.
“We just kept attacking and just couldn’t get it in,” McAlinden said. “It was frustrating.”
PEGS played a counter-attacking game and forced Tigers goalkeeper Rachel Catania into a couple of strong saves.
“One goal is not a lot to rely on,” McAlinden said.“We had it three weeks ago against Melbourne and they scored the equaliser in the last minute and a half.
“You can’t relax until the 70 minutes are up, but our defence was really good and Rachel in the net played very well. She saved us as she does each week.”
Chloe Pickersgill was the Tigers’ most influential player, plugging holes left, right and centre.
“She started off in defence and then we moved her into the midfield,” McAlinden said. “She dominated wherever she went.”
