The Werribee Tigers’ third-quarter wobbles struck again in Saturday’s narrow two-point VFL loss to Geelong.

Leading by 16 points at half-time at Avalon Airport Oval, the Tigers loosened their grip on the contest when they conceded three goals to one in the third term.

Three goals may not seem like a lot, but it was huge in a tight, low-scoring scrap in tough conditions.

The Tigers’ lead was whittled down to four points by three-quarter time, close enough for the Cats to launch a successful hit-and-run mission.

The Cats outscored the hosts with two goals to one in the last to grab four premiership points.

Shane Kersten kicked the winning goal in the dying seconds for the Cats.

Mason Wood was the Tigers’ only multiple goalkicker with two on a difficult day for forwards.

Jake Wilson, Tom Holman and Matt Hanson were among the Tigers’ best, while Hugh Wales made his senior debut after three years at the club and 41 development league games.

The Tigers have fallen to seventh on the ladder. They have lost three of their past four matches, two in heartbreaking fashion by less than a kick.

They will play the third of a block of four home games against the Sandringham Zebras at Watton Street on Saturday.

The Zebras are one of the hottest teams in the competition, having won five of their
past six matches, including one against the Tigers.

The Tigers will need to be at their best if they are to turn their form around.
