Shoot-on-sight Point Cook fire 11 past Maribyrnong Greens

Point Cook has gone on a goal-scoring spree in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4.

The Jets were irrepressible in an 11-0 romp over lowly Maribyrnong Greens at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday.

It is not only their merciless dumping of the Greens that rocketed them to fourth on the ladder. They have won five of their past six matches, with a forceful goal difference of 31-plus.

The Craig Filer-coached Jets scored 37 goals and conceded just six over the past six games.

And, all of a sudden, they are just three points outside the promotion places.

Point Cook scored six first-half goals against the Greens and never let up, piling on a further five in the second half.

Matthew Lawtey was in the zone, with a remarkable seven goals.

Lawtey, who’d only scored six times in his previous 11 matches, broke off the leash and went on a rampage.

Even David Gazzard’s three goals took a back seat to Lawtey’s magnificent seven.

For the record, Shaun Rodden and Kyle Caruana were the Jets’ other goal-scorers.

The Jets will be out to keep their winning run going when they visit Altona North on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Truganina remains in the dreaded relegation picture after a 2-0 loss to Altona North at Duane Reserve last Saturday.

The Hornets have a massive encounter with second-last Spring Hills at Arndell Park Reserve on Saturday, which could have a big impact on the survival prospects of both teams.

In the NPL, Werribee City had an entertaining 2-2 draw with Ballarat Red Devils at Galvin Park.

The Bees finished the game with 10 men after a second yellow card to Jonathan Voulagaris.

Voulgaris was the Bees’ first goal-scorer in the first half, while Shaun Weaver scored the second late in the second half.

The Bees will travel to face title contenders’ St Albans Saints at Churchill Reserve on Sunday.
