A group of residents remains hopeful as it waits for a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal decision on a controversial Werribee subdivision next to Riverbend Historic Park.

The initial permit application sought to subdivide a block of land bounded by Purchas Street and Heaths Road into 49 lots, each of between 400 and 500 square metres.

Wyndham council rejected the application last December.

The developer’s appeal to VCAT was heard from July 5 to 7. Residents joined the council in opposing the subdivision.

It may take up to four weeks for the tribunal to come to a decision on the subdivision.

Riverbend resident Denise Huxtable, among 50 residents who joined the council at VCAT, said the developer had signalled reductions in its proposal and she hoped there would be more.

In the weeks leading up to the hearing, the developer reduced the number of proposed lots from 49 to 41 and has now agreed that only one dwelling should be allowed per lot.

“We’ve already seen some positive changes made,” Ms Huxtable said after the hearing.

“We’ve had some small victories. We’ve ensured that Riverbend Park remains a place of historic value and is taken into account by the whole planning system.”
