Werribee City’s woes have been compounded with the resignation of coach Dom Gangemi.
The Bees are rock bottom with just one point in seven games in the National Premier League 2 west soccer and it all became too much for Gangemi.
Bees chairman Giovanni Inserra notified the club’s members in a letter on Wednesday of the parting.
“Whilst it is terribly disappointing that Domenic has come to this decision, he feels that in the best interests of the club and the playing group it is the correct thing to do,” Inserra said in the letter.
“From the club’s perspective, we do not believe that the lack of results to date is a reflection of the technical or tactical ability of the coaching staff and nor do we believe that the current group of players are not good enough for this competition.
“I firmly believe that we have put together a playing group in line with the club’s vision and long-term strategy, which is to return to the top NPL tier by season 2019 … we will continue with this strategy irrespective of who is appointed to take on the head coach position at the club.”
The Bees do not have any plans to rush the coaching appointment.
“The current committee and club personnel are certainly not giving up and we will not be changing the focus surrounding the direction of this football club, which is to build senior and under-20 squads around local, home-grown, talented youth,” Inserra said.
“Together – and with the support of all our players, parents and supporters – we can achieve what we have set out to do.”
Inserra thanked Gangemi for his 12 months’ of service, in which he served as both technical director and first team coach.
“He has demonstrated a passion and professionalism at all times, which has definitely added value to our club,” he said.
Werribee City sunk to its sixth loss in seven games with a 5-2 defeat to St Albans Saints at Galvin Park on Saturday.
The Bees conceded the first two goals to trail 2-0 at half-time, but found a way back after the break with two goals in three minutes from Delfin Mosibe Esara.
The Saints, one of the title contenders, scored the final three goals of the match to extinguish any hope the Bees had of holding on for a draw.
The Bees will square off with Moreland City on Saturday at Campbell Reserve.
