Late goals save Hoppers Crossing

All’s well that ends well.

What could have been a disastrous day for Hoppers Crossing turned out to be one of its most memorable of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 season.

The Reds were seemingly gone for all money at home against Diamond Valley United at Grange Reserve on Saturday, trailing 2-0 and with just 19 minutes of normal time to negotiate their way out of trouble.

Entering the game two points behind ladder leader Altona City, it would have been a dagger to their title hopes had they not capitalised on City leaving points on the table in a 1-1 draw at Sporting Whittlesea.

So Hoppers Crossing lifted, coming back from the dead with three consecutive goals to beat Diamond Valley 3-2 in a remarkable turn-around victory.

Matthew Scott, Darryl Roach and Liam McDermott found the scoresheet to seal all three points for the Reds. Hoppers Crossing is now level on points with Altona City, but remains second on goal difference.

The Reds will be looking to ride the wave of momentum into their away trip to Cairnlea on Saturday.

In the National Premier League 2, Werribee City had a 2-2 draw on the road against Bendigo City at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve.

Djordje Aleksic and George Slefendorfas found the back of the net for the Bees.

Werribee City is back at home on Sunday, where it will entertain Northcote City.

In women’s state league 3, Point Cook held its four-point lead at the top with a 2-0 win over Melbourne University, while Hoppers Crossing dismantled RMIT 7-0 after a hat-trick to Leonora Wharehinga.
