Point Cook Soccer Club is hoping its senior men’s soccer side can recover from a slow start and make a push up the FFV state league 4 ladder.
Seven rounds into the season, the Jets are sixth with three wins. From a similar position last year, the club went on to finish second.
Point Cook vice-president Lindsay Phillips is confident the players can repeat that effort.
Phillips said he thought the young side simply needed more playing time after a number of changes in the off-season.
“A similar thing happened last year and it was four or five weeks before the team was able to gel together,” he said.
“This year we have quite a few more young kids.
“We’ve got two or three around 16 or 17 years of age playing in the senior team at the moment. I think our youngest is about 15. It’s a very young squad. I would say the average age is low 20s.”
Despite not going at 100 per cent, the Jets are defending well. They have conceded just 12 goals this season.
“We have got a couple of good keepers even though we have suffered a few injuries in that area,” Phillips said.
“Our attack, if anything, at this stage has been our weakness. Our defence has been quite good.
“The attacking side of the game and the strikers will hopefully step up in the next couple of weeks.”
This season is just Point Cook’s second in senior competition.
After a brilliant debut year, in which the club won 16 games in state league 5 and was promoted, the Jets are hoping more success will follow.
“Our first goal is to finish in the top two so we can get promoted.” Phillips said.
“That’s always the goal. Failing that, we want to finish as high up on the ladder as we can.
“We really want to keep the momentum of the club going. To finish second in our first year was fantastic.
“We’re still hopeful that we can pull some results out and hopefully mirror that success again this year.”
