WERRIBEE City claimed its first win since April in a late show over Altona Magic on the road at Paisley Park in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 on Sunday.
The Bees scored twice in the last 20 minutes to return with all three points and a 2-1 victory.
The win put an end to a tough run of matches that saw the Bees draw three times and lose to premiership favourite Heidelberg United 5-1.
Bees sports director Giorgio Pastorini said it was a relief to return with maximum points.
“It was a good win for us,’’ he said. “We came from a heavy defeat against Heidelberg two weeks ago. We were in need of some fresh air, some points.”
The Bees were a goal in arrears at half-time, with a mix-up by two defenders in the penalty area resulting in an tap-in goal to Magic striker Stevce Dimcevski.
The second half became a war of words, with the referee having the final say, dismissing a player from each side 10 minutes apart.
This played into the hands of the trailing Bees, who found themselves with extra room to move and exploited the gaping hole in the Magic midfield.
The Bees were back on level terms when captain Milan Savic scored with a powerful strike from 20 metres on 70 minutes.
Five minutes later, Gazmend Ajdini’s close-range goal landed all three points.
In men’s state league 4 west, Hoppers Crossing picked up a hard-earned point in a 1-1 draw with Western Eagles away at the Polish Sports and Recreation Complex.
In men’s state league 5 west, the derby between Point Cook and Truganina Hornets at Saltwater Reserve was abandoned with the score at 0-0 in the second half due to a Hornets player requiring urgent medical assistance.
