WERRIBEE has the in-form batting line-up in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association.
The last thing you want to do is send them in on a fast deck and a fast outfield at Chirnside Park.
But the Tigers got an unexpected gift from the Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows Falcons on Saturday.
The toss of the coin might not have fallen the way of skipper Shaun Dean, but he need not worry.
“Surprisingly, we lost the toss and were sent in on a flat wicket, which just shocked me,” Dean told the Weekly.
“We were more than happy to accept that.”
The Falcons were made to rue that decision.
The home side gleefully smoked the ball to all sections. The Tigers finished the day on 7-341 off their 80 overs.
“It just keeps rolling on I suppose,” Dean said of their batting form.
“We haven’t really faltered with the bat.
“There’s not much more I can say.”
Again, a feature of the Tigers’ compilation was their ability to share the runs. The highest individual scorer was Tim O’Brien with 59.
There were other significant contributions in the top order from David Wolfe (42), Dean (30), Kyle Andrews (24), Jake Purton (21).
What makes this beast hard to contain is the depth of batting order.
The lower order is producing more like all-rounders, not tail-enders.
Excitement machine Wade McCall blasted 55 in quick time before Adam Alifraco (44) and Matthew Thomson (42) combined for a 66-run stand in the last six devastating overs of the day.
“The top order sets the platform every week,” Dean said.
“Then, with 20 overs to spare, you’ve got your middle to lower-order batsmen coming in and they are more than capable of batting higher. It’s just the strength of our team at the moment.”
Play will resume on Saturday at 1pm.
