IT was a mixed home finale for Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League at the weekend.
The Aces split their four-game home series with the Adelaide Bite at the Melbourne Ballpark.
The series got off to a promising start with the Aces claiming the first two games.
On Thursday, in a game played in searing 40-degree heat, the Aces were victorious 3-2.
Starting pitcher John Hussey picked up the win after seven innings of work.
Justin Huber (2 hits, 2 RBIs) and Carlo Testa (2 hits, 1 RBI) got the job done in the batter’s box.
On Friday, the Aces tacked on seven runs from innings six to eight to run out 8-2 winners.
Starter Kevin Reese picked up his second win of the summer.
Testa, again, was the go-to man with the stick, launching a three-run homer in the seventh.
The Bite bit back in the last two games of the series. They took out Saturday’s duel 12-6 and slammed the door shut on the Aces with a 9-0 result a day later.
The Aces head to Perth for the start of a four-game series tomorrow night knowing they cannot move from the foot of the standings.
In other baseball news, the Werribee Giants will be the host of this year’s State Little League Championships.
Games will be played at President’s Park from tomorrow through to Saturday.
The west’s representative team, the Western Mets, will play against Yarra Rangers (tomorrow, 10am), Southern Mariners (tomorrow 1pm), Northern D-Backs (Friday, 11am), Sunraysia (Friday, 2.30pm) and Bellarine Rays (Saturday, 11am).
Finals will be played later on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Giants kept up their winning form in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2, beating Moorabbin 6-4 on Sunday.
