Wyndham’s police highway patrol has branded the Queen’s Birthday weekend one of its safest in recent years but is still cautioning against drink-driving.
Police were out in force during the statewide Operation Regal, patrolling roads and undertaking tasks including automatic number plate recognition and breath testing.
The 84 offences detected in Wyndham between June 5 and 8 included 25 unregistered vehicles, 15 unlicensed drivers, 12 seatbelt offences, eight speeding offences, and six disqualified or suspended drivers.
Five drivers were also found to be over the legal drinking limit, including one who was instructing a learner driver.
Westgate road policing adviser Damien Madden said Wyndham’s highway patrol was joined by other Wyndham units, officers from Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong and the Operations Response Unit for the four-day operation.
Senior Sergeant Madden said the Queen’s Birthday weekend was traditionally a high-risk period for road trauma in Wyndham, especially over the past five years.
“We only had four, non-injury, collisions over the weekend so there were no trauma collisions,” he said.
“Having said that, we still had five drink-drivers caught at the weekend …if you think you’re over the limit, you probably are.”
