Meet the Werribee Racing Club’s new general manager Glenn Scott.
A former race horse owner, Mr Scott is keen to broaden the club’s membership base and attract a younger generation of racegoers.
Mr Scott, the club’s first full-time general manager since April last year, has had an extensive career in the corporate world, particularly in the sports industry.
He has held roles with the National Basketball League, Victorian Country Football League and Racing Victoria, and has run his own sports marketing and management consultancy.
He also spent 20 years working for Goodyear Tyre and Rubber company, rising up the ranks to become Australian general manager.
“I’m coming in at a time when the club’s on a good footing,” Mr Scott said.
“It has consolidated in the last three to four years and I think it’s going to be terrific in times ahead. The quarantine centre coming here has given us a really strong backbone for all of our planning, even though it means we can’t race in the lead-up to the spring.”
The club is working on a strategic plan that will be heavily focused on engaging the local business and broader community, including sports clubs.
In another move, the Werribee Cup will become a December event from this year, when it will be run in conjunction with the club’s race day on Sunday, December 13.
The Werribee Cup, which has historically run on the Wednesday before the Melbourne Cup, has struggled to hold onto a consistent date since the international quarantine centre opened in the suburb in 2010.
Mr Scott is confident that moving the Werribee Cup to December will be a winning formula.
