Werribee Primary School pupils were the ultimate Christmas elves last week, raising money to buy toys for children less fortunate.
The school’s grade 4 and 6 pupils hosted an ice-cream stall last Tuesday, and used the $1192 raised to buy a range of toys which were donated to Uniting Wyndham’s Kids Hope campaign. The presents are distributed to children who might otherwise not receive presents over the festive season.
Teacher Lucy McCarthy said the pupils loved taking part in the annual fundraiser.
“It’s such a nice thing to do, to give back and know that Christmas is not just about getting presents.”
Uniting Wyndham volunteer co-ordinator Grant Potter said the toy drive taught pupils to think of others.
He said the school had been taking part in the toy drive for the past 12 years.
“It’s an amazing feat,” he said. “At that age, you don’t understand poverty and what it’s like to go without.”
Cath Guerrieri from Uniting Wyndham added: “It’s heartwarming to see the kids receive the presents”.
